Therapy for Gay & Queer Couples
Navigating relationships and the myriad of emotions that they evoke can be challenging, beautiful, and aggravating - and at times, all of these things at once. Each relationship is as unique as the individuals that comprise it. Relationships form and develop over time and are influenced by the universe of experience that each partner brings. But, what happens when a once loving and trusting relationship takes a turn to what can feel like an inescablable self-perpetuating negative cycle. What was once a wellspring of refuge and support now feels more like a chore and an exhausting task of walking on eggshells.
Unique Challenges and Relationships
Queer couples face different challenges than cishet couples. Navigating social and family dynamics, sex, open relationships, polyamory, and finances can be a significant source of stress thus negatively impacting the bond between partners. Working with a clinician who is intimately familiar with the community becomes of increasing important.
My Approach to LGBTQAI2S+ Couple Therapy:
My Approach to couple therapy is based on attachment science, Non-Violent Communication, and Sue Johnson’s Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). We work together to create/re-create a safe and secure bond, a deep understanding, and accountability between partners. As part of our work together, we identify and slow down the negative cycle to get a better understanding of each partner’s underlying needs and longings. This helps partners to see, hear, and experience each other in new and more authentic ways thus promoting lasting change and wellness in the relationship.
